Competition in 42 Sports at 2018 Asian Games
Jakarta. A total of 42 sporting disciplines will be contested at the 2018 Asian Games, which will be hosted by Jakarta and Palembang, South Sumatra.
"There are 42 sport disciplines, including martial arts – kurash, sambo, wushu, pencak silat and jiu-jitsu – that will be contested at the 2018 Asian Games, as finalized in March 2017," Harry Warganegara Harun, acting secretary general of the Indonesian Asian Games Organizing Committee (Inasgoc), told the Jakarta Globe on Sunday (12/03).
The Asian Games involve not only Olympic sports, and the host country has the right to propose certain sports to be included in the event. The inclusion of pencak silat, a traditional form of martial arts that originated in the archipelago, was approved at Indonesia's request last year.
"Pencak silat is officially included [in the 2018 Asian Games]," Harry said.
The sports for the 2018 Asian Games are aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, baseball/softball, boxing, bowling, bridge, cricket, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, handball, hockey, jet-skiing, judo, kabaddi, karate (including jiu-jitsu, kurash, sambo, wushu and pencak silat), modern pentathlon, paragliding, roller-sports, rowing, sevens rugby, sailing, sepak takraw, shooting, sports climbing, squash, surfing, table tennis, tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling.
Taekwondo
The Olympic Council of Asia has also allocated 20 gold medals to taekwondo at next year's Games.
In kyorugi, a subcategory of taekwondo, there will be eight gold medals for men and eight for women, while four medals will be at stake in another subcategory, known as poomsae.
"Indonesia as the host country has proposed to see poomsae in the 2018 Asian Games and it has been granted by the OCA during a meeting by technical delegates in Jakarta on March 6," Insagoc said in a statement received by the Jakarta Globe on Friday.
