Bekasi. Indonesia's national under-23 men's football team started its 2018 Asian Games campaign with an emphatic 4-0 win against Taiwan on Sunday (12/08).
The team, managed by former Barcelona player Luis Milla, had a frustrating first half, during which it failed to find Taiwan's goalkeeper Pan Wenchieh despite dominating possession, BeritaSatu.com reported.
The first successful strike into Taiwan's goal occurred in the 67th minute with a close-range free kick from the right wing by Stefano Lilipaly. Saddil Ramdani nearly scored again in the 69th minute, but his effort was thrown off-course during a confrontation with the goalkeeper.
An individual effort by Alberto Goncalves in the 71st minute gave the team its second goal. Ignoring a decoy from the penalty box, Goncalves calmly released a close-range shot against the Taiwanese goalkeeper.
Lilipaly scored again in the 75th minute with a piercing salvo that shifted the score to 3-0 in Indonesia's favor.
The fourth goal was the result of a speculative shot by Hargianto from outside the penalty box, which caught the Taiwanese goalkeeper off guard.
At least 20,000 supporters packed Patriot Chandrabaga Stadium in Bekasi, West Java, for the match.
Tohap Martua Pakpahan, a member of the Indonesia Asian Games Organizing Committee (Inasgoc), said he expected strong support for the national team, especially after Indonesia's under-16 team won the Asean Football Federation Championship on Saturday.
"Supporters' interest in the national team in the Asian Games has shot through the roof due to last night's AFF match," he said on Sunday.
Inasgoc said it sold 20,000 online tickets, or a third of what was available for Sunday's match. Another 40,000 tickets were sold offline at the stadium and at retailers.
On Wednesday, Indonesia will face Palestine, which currently leads in Group A, having won both its matches last week.
Indonesia's remaining matches, against Laos and Hong Kong, will be on Friday and next Monday, respectively. All Group A matches will take place at Patriot Chandrabaga Stadium.
