Ahok and Anies Significantly Increase Poll Numbers but Agus Remains Front Runner
Jakarta. The approval ratings of Jakarta gubernatorial contenders Anies Baswedan and Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama significantly increased over the past two months, but Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono remained the front runner in the race, the results of a poll released on Thursday (19/01) shows.
The results of the survey, carried out by Poltracking Indonesia between Jan. 9 and 13, come a week after the first of three gubernatorial debates ahead of the election on Feb. 15.
The increase in the electability rating of Anies and running mate Sandiaga Uno was the most significant among the contenders, but the pair remained behind Agus-Sylviana Murni and Ahok-Djarot Saiful Hidayat, the poll shows.
The approval rating of Anies-Sandiaga increased to 28.63 percent from 20.42 percent in November, according to the survey conducted among 800 respondents and which had a 3.46 percent error margin.
The poll shows that Agus-Sylviana remained the leaders in the race but that the increase in their electability rating was the smallest among the contenders, to 30.25 percent currently from 27.92 percent in November.
"The shock effect from Agus-Sylviana has begun to abate. Conditions are all back to normal now. Residents have started to look at the programs proposed by the candidates," Poltracking Indonesia executive director Hanta Yuda said during the release of the survey results in Jakarta.
The poll shows that the approval rating of incumbent pair Ahok-Djarot increased to 28.88 percent currently from 22 percent in November, placing them behind Agus-Sylviana and ahead of Anies-Sandiaga.
The three candidate pairs engaged in heated arguments during last week's televised debate as they conveyed their plans for social development and the economy, education, as well as transportation and the environment in Jakarta for the next five years.
