Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil Plans to Run in West Java Gubernatorial Election
Bandung. Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil said on Monday (06/03) that he is prepared to run in next year's West Java gubernatorial election.
When asked by reporters to elaborate on his plans, Ridwan said he will only apply for nomination if he can gain enough support from one of Indonesia's national political parties.
"I am prepared to run. Quality leadership can be applied at any level of government," Ridwan said, as reported by state-run news agency Antara.
Ridwan has not yet committed to entering the race, but none of the established political parties have so far declared support for the mayor, who has been in office since 2013.
"I must know my limits, and I cannot take any decisions on that by myself," he said.
The mayor said he is willing to work with any political party that is open to supporting his candidacy.
"I am always open to collaboration with any party that wants to work together. The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle [PDI-P] invited me and I have met them. If other parties wish to meet with me, I will come," Ridwan said.
There were rumors last year that Ridwan might contest the Jakarta gubernatorial election, as political analysts believed that he would have been the strongest contender to wrest the governorship from incumbent Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama.
Instead, Ridwan announced his decision to stay in the West Java capital and continue his work as mayor.
