Djarot Sports New Look on Run-Off Election Ballot
Jakarta. Jakarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat will sport a new look on the ballot paper for the run-off election on April 19: the ubiquitous "peci" or "kopiah" commonly worn by Indonesian Muslims.
The Jakarta Election Commission, or KPUD, started printing the new ballot papers on Thursday (23/03).
The Ahok-Djarot campaign team, now known as BaDja, had proposed the new look. Rivals Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno also wear the peci on their ballot photos.
"Yes, Djarot’s photo has been changed for the run-off election," KPUD Jakarta member Dahlia Umar said on Thursday.
Djarot said the peci is not just a Muslim symbol, but a national one.
"Bung Karno used to wear it, too," Djarot said, referring to Indonesia's first president.
