Jakarta's Jalan Sudirman Partly Closed Due to FPI Rally
Jakarta. Central Jakarta's Jalan Jenderal Sudirman was partly closed on Wednesday morning (01/02) as hundreds of members of the Islamic Defenders Front, or FPI, marched from Al Azhar Mosque on Jalan Sisimangaraja to rally at the Jakarta Police headquarters during the questioning of their leader, Rizieq Shihab.
The hardline group protested the police probe against Rizieq, who is facing a number of criminal charges, including an alleged insult to the official state ideology Pancasila, in which he has been named a suspect.
During the rally, one lane of Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, from Semanggi Interchange to the Pemuda Membangun monument in Senayan area, was closed.
Rizieq arrived at the police headquarters at 10.30 a.m. to be questioned as a witness in an investigation over an alleged plot against the state.
The police will also interrogate FPI spokesman Munarman and chairman of the Guardians of the Indonesian Ulema Council's Fatwas (GNPF-MUI) Bachtiar Nasir to investigate their participation in a number of meetings at Bung Karno University in Central Jakarta, during which a scheme had reportedly been hatched to overthrow the legitimate government.
In the same case, police have already questioned political observer Ichsanuddin Noorsy, Confederation of Indonesian Worker's Unions (KSPI) chairman Said Iqbal and KSPI secretary general M. Rusdi.
