Mass Organizations Cannot Oppose Pancasila: People’s Consultative Assembly Speaker
Jakarta. Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly, or MPR, Zulkifli Hasan has said no mass organization in Indonesia is permitted to oppose the state ideology of Pancasila.
“If there is a mass organization that defies Pancasila, than it cannot be justified as it is a violation to our constitution,” Zulkifli said during a public lecture at Muhammadiyah University in Solo, Central Java, on Tuesday (17/01).
Indonesia is currently facing a variety of challenges because of globalization, including social inequality, he said. He also pointed to a declining sense of solidarity among Indonesians, which could be resolved through Pancasila values.
“These challenges will be overcome with one condition, which is to return to Pancasila and our Indonesian transcendent values,” Zulkifli said.
“Moreover, we have to strengthen our competitiveness in facing the Asean Economic Community [AEC]. Do not let us become workers in our own country and for other countries,” he added.
Indonesia has recently faced multiple challenges in maintaining the presence of Pancasila among the public, with emerging mass organization protests in recent months, including various parties that had tried to conduct a plot against the government and the state's symbol of Pancasila.
