MPR Speaker Calls for Greater Unity in Diversity
Jakarta. Zulkifli Hasan, speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly, or MPR, has called on all parties to safeguard Indonesia's unity in diversity.
"The agreement to unite in diversity was final. A great nation must respect diversity; differences between one another," Zulkifli said in Jakarta on Tuesday (11/10).
He emphasized the importance of strengthening the national values laid down in the Pancasila state ideology, which includes the principle of reaching agreement through deliberation among representatives — a practice which, according to Zulkifli, has been in decline in Indonesia.
"Pancasila is no longer taken seriously. Everyone wants immediate results and doesn't seem to care for their compatriots," he said.
Zulkifli called on all parties to support the state policy guidelines currently under discussion in the MPR.
"With these guidelines, reaching the goal of common welfare can become more focused. It is high time for us to unite in diversity, be economically sovereign and guarantee prosperity and justice to all," the National Mandate Party (PAN) politician said.
