MPR Speaker Zulkifli Hasan Calls on Public to Avoid Money Politics in Regional Elections
Jakarta. Zulkifli Hasan, speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly, or MPR, has called on all Indonesians to avoid any form of money politics in this week's simultaneous regional elections.
Speaking during a press conference at the legislative complex in Senayan, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (14/02), he urged Indonesians to avoid conflict with their fellow citizens over political differences.
"The sovereignty and power are fully in the hands of the people. Do not trade it for money or staple foods," Zulkifli said.
He also reminded voters that those competing for the leadership seats are also Indonesian citizens.
"Whoever leads, the winner is still an Indonesian," he said.
Zulkifli urged local organizers, the General Elections Commission (KPU), Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) and security officials to remain neutral and independent.
"Only take the side of the red-and-white," he said, referring to the Indonesian national flag.
Zulkifli expressed hope that all elements would ensure the security and success of the regional elections, despite the various choices people will make.
