Jakarta. The Jakarta Election Commission, or KPUD, on Friday (05/05) officially announced Anies Baswedan and his running mate Sandiaga Uno as the winners of the capital city’s gubernatorial election runoff last month.

"We officially declare Anies Rasyid Baswedan and Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno as Jakarta's elected governor and deputy governor from 2017 to 2022," Sumarno, the head of KPUD Jakarta, said at his office in Senen, Central Jakarta, as quoted by Kompas.com.

KPUD Jakarta had already released official vote count results from the election runoff on April 30, which showed that Anies and Sandi won in each district of the capital city.

According to the official results, Anies and Sandiaga won 57.96 percent of the total votes, nearly 16 percent more than the number of votes won by incumbent governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama and his deputy Djarot Saiful Hidayat.

In a press conference after the official declaration, Anies thanked KPUD Jakarta for staying neutral and impartial, and for executing each step of the election process in accordance with the law.

"They're working not to please people, but to make sure rules are being followed to a T," Anies said.

Anies also thanked his hardworking campaign team for the surprise win. "This is our victory. This will bring good to all of us," he said.

Anies referred to his predecessor Ahok in his speech, saying "We're continuing your journey. Please pray for us so we can take on this huge responsibility," Anies said.

Answering reporters' questions about his rumored "political contract" ensuring he will not consider a run in the 2019 presidential election, Anies said, "We never made a contract like that. Try to find it in our drawers, it's not going to be there."
