Perludem's Titi Anggraini Appointed as Democracy Ambassador of International IDEA
Jakarta. Titi Anggraini, executive director of the Association for Elections and Democracy, or Perludem, has been appointed as an ambassador for democracy by Stockholm-based International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, or International IDEA.
"This is really an honor to me as an activist. This mandate is also the world's recognition of Indonesia's journey to democracy," Titi said in a statement on Tuesday (24/10).
Indonesia, the world's third largest democracy, is preparing for next year's simultaneous elections in 171 provinces, cities and districts, as well as its first-ever simultaneous legislative and presidential poll in 2019.
On Sunday, International IDEA announced its 11 new democracy ambassadors. Titi is featured along former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan who comes from Ghana, Chilean politician Sergio Bitar, Dutch politician of Turkish descent Emine Bozkurt, former President of Costa Rica Laura Chinchilla, Swedish diplomat and former UN Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson, Australian politician and former president of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group Gareth Evans, Nigerian antigraft activist and co-founder of Transparency International Obiageli Ezekwesili, Thai politician and scholar Surin Pitsuwan, India's former Chief Election Commissioner S. Y. Quraishi, and former President of Latvia Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga.
To contribute to the global efforts to protect democracy, International IDEA has developed "The Global State of Democracy" publication, which will be launched on Nov. 15 in Stockholm.
"The democracy ambassadors have been tasked with putting the spotlight on the challenges and developments of democracy that are highlighted in the publication — joining International IDEA's call to support and safeguard democracy," the organization said on its website.
