Surya Paloh Breakfasts With Jokowi, Says Coup Attempts Are Unconstitutional
Jakarta. Nasdem, or National Democratic Party, chairman Surya Paloh said his party will resist any coup attempt against President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo’s administration.
"People who try to bring down the government should be resisted. We'll fight [them]," Surya said after a breakfast meeting with Jokowi in Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday (22/11).
According to the senior politician, everyone, not just security officers, should watch out for plotters against the government.
Surya also said the country's constitution should be upheld at all times.
"If someone wants to bring down the government, Nasdem will act," Surya said.
Surya questioned the motive behind more anti-Ahok protests planned for Nov. 25 and Dec. 2, since Jakarta governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama has already been named as a suspect in a blasphemy investigation by the police.
Meanwhile, National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said some individuals or groups may have been using Ahok’s blasphemy investigation to drum up support to bring down the president.
Reportedly, these groups will try to force their way into the parliamentary complex on Nov. 25 or Dec. 2. The police have investigated the allegations and now claimed to know names of people in the groups.
"We have investigated the coup rumors. These groups want to take over the parliament building, whip up the crowd into a frenzy. We know what they're doing," Tito said earlier on Monday.
