Jokowi and Manpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri Attend IKA PMII National Conference
Jakarta. Manpower Minister M. Hanif Dhakiri chaired the sixth national conference of the Alumni Association of the Indonesian Muslim Students Movement at the JS Luwansa Hotel in Jakarta on Friday (20/09), and reiterated the organization's commitment to defending Indonesia from radicalism, terrorism and intolerance.
The event commenced with a speech by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, who said that the political work of the association has helped him a great deal.
The association, known as IKA PMII, is related to Indonesia's largest Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama. Established in 1960, the Indonesian Muslim Student Movement played part in many major political shifts.
In the organization's declaration, read out by Hanif, its branches across the country expressed commitment to prevent and fight radicalism, terrorism and intolerance, as they threaten the unity of the nation.
"We will challenge and fight those who support or enable the spread of radical ideas, terrorism and intolerance. We want to invite political elites and everyone else to strengthen dialog and work together to fight radicalism, terrorism and intolerance," Hanif said.
In attendance were Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi, Education Minister Mohamad Nasir, Development Minister Eko Sanjoyo, Maritime Affairs Minister Susi Pudjiastuti, People's Consultative Assembly Deputy Chairman Muhaimin Iskandar, United Development Party (PPP) chairman Romahurmuziy and 1500 students from the Indonesian Muslim Students Movement, representing 27 provinces.
The conference, themed "National Leadership and Public Welfare," runs in Jakarta from July 20 to July 22.
