'Kotaku' Program to Revitalize Slum Areas Shows Good Results in Yogyakarta
Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's "Kotaku," ("My City") program to revitalize slum areas has shown good results in Karangwaru, Yogyakarta.
"The government wants to provide access to basic facilities for everyone. Infrastructure development is not just about building more roads and dams, but also about improving conditions in slum areas around the country," Coordinating Human Development and Cultural Affairs Minister Puan Maharani said during an inspection of the area on Nov. 15.
Kotaku is one of a series of government programs grouped under Jokowi's Mental Revolution.
Puan inspected the results of revitalization efforts at Karangwaru, which were carried out under the auspices of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing.
According to the minister, Karangwaru has become a safer, cleaner and more comfortable place to live with a new 1.3-meter-wide road, two bridges, 14 shelters, 11 green open spaces and two communal septic tanks.
Residents now also have access to a new sports ground, complete with outdoor learning facilities for children.
The Kali Butung River, which runs through the area, had its banks reinforced with retaining walls to reduce the risk of flooding.
"We hope the residents will enjoy the new facilities and take good care of them," Puan said.
The revitalization program at Karangwaru was funded by the government, community members and private companies, which contributed to the cause as part of their corporate social responsibility programs.
