Pelita Harapan University Produces Next Batch of Registered Nurses
Jakarta. Pelita Harapan University's nursing faculty held an official oath-taking ceremony for 48 registered nurses at its campus in Karawaci, Tangerang district, Banten, on Nov. 07.
Since its initiation in 2008, the faculty has produced 381 graduates with bachelor's degrees in nursing, 258 of which went on to complete the professional program to become registered nurses.
Around 80 percent of the graduates are now working in hospitals across Indonesia, according to Grace Wirawan, the faculty's manager of academic support and general administration. Some of the graduates also decided to continue their studies abroad.
Grace also mentioned that the faculty's Entry to Practice program offers full scholarships to high school and vocational high school graduates. Selection takes place in 30 cities across Indonesia, where participants are interviewed and required to undergo general knowledge and psychological tests.
"The scholarship program is aimed at producing professional nurses with compassion and Christian values in accordance to the UPH's [Pelita Harapan University] vision and mission. An advantage is that they can work at Siloam Hospitals across the country right after they graduate, so that they don't have to worry about not getting a job," Grace said.
Evan Winda Sarma Siahaan, a distinguished graduate of Entry to Practice program, said UPH offered a holistic education, which also taught leadership values and how to serve with compassion.
The scholarship scheme has also attracted more students to enroll at UPH. Grace said the faculty accepted 510 students this year, which is a 55 percent increase from last year.
Besides the Entry to Practice program, there is a Conversion Class program that enables diploma graduates to obtain their nursing degrees.
"Prior to taking this program, I was already working as a nurse. However, since I started studying here for my bachelor's degree, I became able to treat my patients differently. I was able to serve with love and make a connection with patients. Obviously, this program also enriched my knowledge and upgraded my skills as a nurse," said Dwi Sartika, a distinguished Conversion Class graduate.
Pelita Harapan University and the Jakarta Globe are both affiliated with the Lippo Group.
