Jakarta. The Indonesian military, or TNI, is gearing itself up to provide beefed up security for the annual meeting between the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Bali this October, an official said on Tuesday (06/02).

"We are setting up a joint task force on security, as instructed by the Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister and the TNI chief," TNI's chief of staff Didit Herdiawan told reporters in Jakarta.

The IMF-World Bank annual meeting will take place in Nusa Dua, Bali, in October. The high-profile international event is expected to draw in 15,000 participants from 189 countries.

National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said last December the meeting may pose security risks, as will the 2018 Asian Games in August, especially since the United States and Israel will take part in both events.

Making the two international events a success are on top of the list of priorities for the National Police this year.

Last week, the deputy chief of the National Police, Comr. Gen. Syafruddin, said the police will need back up from the military to safeguard upcoming international events, as reported by CNN Indonesia.

"World leaders will attend the events…. We can’t be overconfident with our own ability, so we’re going to need the TNI to back us up," Syafruddin said.

On Jan. 23, the National Police and TNI extended their cooperation agreement on maintaining public security and order — which has raised concerns that the military might start to get itself involved in stamping out strikes or public protests.

The Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH Jakarta) said the agreement is in violation of TNI regulation.
