Jokowi Warns Military, Police of Massive Global Changes
Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has warned the Indonesian Military and the National Police to brace themselves for rapid, massive changes in global politics and security — especially those caused by swift advancement in information technology.
"We've been witnessing rapid global changes every day, hour, minute, second. New problems keep appearing even before we have solved the existing ones," Jokowi said in a speech at the TNI headquarters in East Jakarta on Monday (16/01).
The meeting was attended by a total of 184 high-ranking military and police officers.
Jokowi said the government has prepared policies that they will roll out gradually to face these global challenges.
The president also pointed out a worldwide slowdown in economic growth.
"The global economy has not recovered, and more changes are coming through. We might see big changes in the United States' policies once Donald Trump enters the Oval Office," the president added.
Jokowi also offered his opinion on online shopping, which has in a short time become one of the nation's favorite past times. The president said that technology has quickly changed consumer behavior.
"Now people sell goods through online stores instead of malls or markets," he said. According to the president, these e-commerce platforms will pose a difficulty for law enforcers to monitor the flow of goods.
"Almost every country has its own platforms, for retail and logistics. If we don't have our own, it will be difficult to control the flow of goods," Jokowi said.
