Jakarta. National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian deplored the murder of cadet Mohammad Adam, whose body was discovered on Thursday morning (18/05) in Semarang, Central Java.

Preliminary examinations showed that Adam suffered several heavy-impact bruises to his chest, believed to have been induced by fellow cadets at the National Police Academy.

Tito called the incident tragic and said it should serve as a wake-up call for the academy to adjust educational and cultural standards to stem a streak of rising violence among cadets.

"I regret this incident, as I had stressed to all students and supervisors that violent culture must be stopped," Tito said in Jakarta.

According to the general, there is no place for violence among cadets, who should strive for integrity and mutual respect as they train to become fully fledged police officers.

"This is also aligned with my promotional campaign, where I have conveyed to authorities and students alike to suppress violent culture," he added.

Tito also instructed the Central Java Police chief and the National Police’s internal affairs bureau to carefully investigate and punish those cadets found to be involved in Mohammad's alleged murder.

"I have [also] instructed the [Police Academy] governor to aid the victim's family and seek criminal charges for the offenders."

Police have begun investigations into Mohammad's murder, with 21 witnesses questioned in the case so far.

Adam’s deceased body has since been transferred from Semarang to Jakarta, after previously undergoing coronary examinations.
