Chicco Jerikho Raises Money for Yogyakarta Coffee Farmers on His Birthday
Jakarta. Indonesian actor Chicco Jerikho celebrates his 33rd birthday on Monday (03/07) by raising money for coffee farmers in Sidorejo, a village located at the foot of Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta.
Chicco, who plays barista Ben in the upcoming drama "Filosofi Kopi 2: Ben & Jody," is aiming to raise Rp 33 million so coffee farmers in the village can buy a coffee maker machine. He will also train the farmers on how to use the machine.
Chicco said in a statement his love for coffee goes beyond his role as barista in the new movie. Coffee, for the award-winning actor who won the Citra Award for Best Actor in 2014, is serious business.
"I am asking coffee lovers to donate what you usually pay for a cup of coffee to this initiative. Since today is my birthday, I hope you will donate to this cause as a present to me," he said.
Sukiman Mochtar Pratomo, a coffee farmer and a coordinator for Lintas Merapi, a volunteer community in the village, said Merapi coffee beans were all the rage back in the 1980s and the farmers in Sidorejo intend to restore them to their former glory.
The farmers already have their own coffee brand, called Cap Petruk, named after a famous clown in wayang stories.
Raising money for a social cause to celebrate birthdays seems to be the thing to do for Indonesian celebrities recently. Chicco follows the footsteps of singers Raisa Tatjana Saphira and Vidi Aldiano and actress Chelsea Islan.
Donation for the Merapi coffee farmers can be made online at Kitabisa.com/kadoultahben.
"Filosofi Kopi 2: Ben & Jody" will screen in Indonesian cinemas starting July 13.
