Nasty Gal Founder Sophia Amoruso Talks Netflix Show 'Girlboss'
Jakarta. Sophia Amoruso, founder of the company Nasty Gal, said her new venture as executive producer of "Girlboss," along with Charlize Theron and "Pitch Perfect" writer Kay Cannon, has been a blast.
Amoruso, who is currently in Indonesia to give a keynote speech at the women's conference Resonation in The Kasablanka Hall in South Jakarta on Saturday (29/04), said she thinks the show is really funny, albeit exaggerated. Speaking at a press event at the Fairmont Hotel in South Jakarta on Friday, Amoruso said she feels strange to see someone else play the fictionalized version of herself.
American actress Britt Robertson plays Amoruso in the show, which Amoruso calls "abrasive, with a lot more cursing."
"It's surreal. It's not something that I really understood until the trailer came out. I'm not the same person. She [the character in the show] is very angry, more angry than I was. I was angry, but I did not yell at people. She yells at people a lot. I did not throw things, I have never done that to anybody," she said.
Amoruso said the show added fictional elements that did not happen in real life, including her parents' role.
"My mother was not a drop-out, she was there. The character of my dad is not that far off, even though they have never met my dad. He's a tough guy, but he wasn't in the position to sign the co-lease with me when I was 22," she said.
Failure is a big theme of the show as Amoruso keeps on ruining her relationships with her best friend Annie (Ellie Reed), boyfriend Shane (Johnny Simmons), her parents and the vintage community on eBay. Netflix released the show, which will have 13 episodes in its debut season, on April 21.
"Girlboss" is a TV adaptation of her memoir of the same title. Amoruso stole the spotlight after Nasty Gal was named one of the fastest-growing companies in 2012. In 2016, the company filed for bankruptcy and Amoruso stepped down as executive chairwoman.
Ticket prices to attend the Resonation conference vary from Rp 520,000 to Rp 1.2 million ($39-$90). Tickets are currently on sale on their official website.
