Jakarta. Indonesian racer Sean Gelael has been named a test driver for Red Bull-owned Scuderia Toro Rosso's Formula One team this season.
The 20-year-old said it was his "dream coming true."
Sean participates in the Formula Two this year, under Pertamina Arden, a team affiliated with Toro Rosso as Arden is owned by Garry Horner, the father of F1 Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner.
"This feels like a dream, I know this is a big opportunity for my career," Sean said in a statement on Thursday (23/03).
"I see this both as motivation and challenge. I need to show good performance in F2 this season," he added.
Toro Rosso, which is deemed Red Bull's "B team," allows Sean to test its car on Bahrain, Hungary and Abu Dhabi circuits in the 2017 F1 season.
With many well-known F1 racers such as Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Valtteri Bottas starting as test drivers, the opportunity seems a good beginning for Sean's international career.
"I still need to work hard every day and won't stop trying to improve to pay back their trust [in me]," Sean said.
The Italian-based Toro Rosso has Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kvyat as its race drivers this season.
