Jokowi Sends VP Kalla to Supervise Preparation for 2018 Asian Games
Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has ordered Vice President Jusuf Kalla to supervise preparation for the 2018 Asian Games, due to be co-hosted by Jakarta and Palembang in September and October next year.
The Indonesian Asian Games Organizing Committee, or Inasgoc, a special committee formed by the Sports Ministry and the Indonesian Olympic Committee is currently running the preparation.
Aside from the Asian Games, Indonesia will also host the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank annual conference in the same year.
"We'll host more than 33,000 athletes for the Asian Games. Then there will be 15,000 delegates coming for the IMF-World Bank conference. These are no small tasks," Jokowi said during a cabinet meeting at the Presidential Office in Jakarta on Thursday (02/03).
"We'll evaluate the Asian Games preparation every month from now on, VP Kalla will oversee that personally. Coordinating Maritime Minister Luhut Panjaitan will organize the IMF-World Bank meeting," he said.
"We have to show people we can host world-class mega events," Jokowi added.
The government has accelerated the completion of several infrastructure projects to make sure they are ready before the Games, two of which are the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) rail networks in Jakarta and Palembang.
