National Football Team Coach Asks for a Raise After AFF Cup Success
Jakarta. Indonesia's national football team coach Alfred Riedl has asked for a raise before extending his contract after his success at the 2016 AFF Cup, but Indonesian Football Association PSSI said it needed more time before deciding whether or not to continue with the services of the Austrian.
Riedl guided Indonesia to the finals of the 2016 AFF Cup, eventually finishing as runners-up, and is willing to continue working with the PSSI after his contract ends, but both parties say they still need to hash out some terms.
"We'll have to make an evaluation first. Riedl has a lot of experience in the AFF Cup, but we need to work out [who will be the best coach for] our next championships, such as the Sea Games and Asian Games," PSSI chairman Edy Rahmayadi said in Jakarta, on Monday (19/12).
"We hired Riedl before the AFF Cup and we were pleasantly surprised with the result," Edy added.
Meanwhile, 67-year-old Riedl said he could lead Indonesia to catch up with 2016 AFF Cup winners Thailand in two years, if he is selected again as coach and is given the flexibility to set up the team himself.
"Thailand has better players at the moment, but Indonesia can catch up in two years," Riedl said.
"At the moment, I don't know whether I will continue coaching Indonesia. I need to speak first with the PSSI," he added.
