Jakarta. Rio Olympic gold medalists Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir have picked up prizes worth Rp 5 billion ($376,000) after returning to Indonesia as champions.
The Djarum Foundation teamed up with Blibli.com to give both shuttlers a house worth Rp 1.5 billion and an addition Rp 1 billion in cash.
The houses, in Graha Padma Residence in Semarang, Central Java, were handed over in a ceremony on Thursday (01/09), attended by the champions' parents and other badminton legends Christian Hadinata, Susi Susanti and Rexy Mainaky.
"Congratulations for [Tontowi and Lilyana] the houses are for appreciating your success," Graha Padma director Hendra Setiaji said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Djarum has long been a huge supporter of badminton in the country, producing talented shuttlers from the PB Djarum club, the former home of both Tontowi and Liliyana as well as other Olympic medalists Alan Budikusuma, Ardy Wiranata and Minarti Timur.
"Thanks to PB Djarum for its appreciation for our win, hopefully the club will always support athletes in the future," Tontowi said.
"This is an appreciation from us, who have trained shuttlers since 1969 and made Indonesia badminton reach its highest level," Djarum Foundation's sporting director Yoppy Rosimin said.
