Jakarta. Indonesian shuttler Tommy Sugiarto defeated Cuban Osleni Guerrero in his second game at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Sunday (14/08), advancing from the group stage.

The world number nine topped Group J after winning two matches, the other against Howard Shu of the United States a day earlier.

Despite the win, Tommy had to overcome tough resistance from the Cuban, who had more power than flexibility. In some rallies, Guerrero often attacked Tommy with powerful-high-leap smashes. Fortunately, Tommy could handle the pressure and won the game with a straight 21-12 and 21-14.

"Guerrero is a good player, he beat Howard Shu with a high score gap. But Tommy could deliver the strategy, although he was bit down sometimes," Tommy's coach Toto Sunarto said after the game, as quoted by Badmintonindonesia.org. "We focused on attacking the opponent's [Guerrero] body area, and it worked as we had learnt about him before."

Tommy will play against Britain's Ouseph Rajiv in the round of 16 on Monday night local time and coach Toto is confident that the Indonesian will advance.

"So far, Tommy has been in good form, his playing standard is beginning to rise," Toto said.
