Two Martial Artists Slashed and Killed by Persebaya Surabaya Supporters
Surabaya. Two members of Setia Hati Teratai, an Indonesian martial arts academy that practices the traditional silat type of fighting, were killed in Surabaya, East Java, on Sunday (01/10) after being involved in a brawl with multiple alleged Persebaya Surabaya football club supporters, known locally as Bonek.
The two martial artists died on their way to the hospital after being attacked by zealous fans as they passed through a formation of Bonek outside the club's stadium.
Surabaya mayor Tri Rismaharini offered condolences to the families of the victims after meeting with the leaders of the local silat and Bonek.
"We visited the victims' homes on Sunday afternoon to give condolences over the incident. The victims are Muhammad Anis [22] and his brother, Aris Eko [25]," Tri said.
Persebaya fans saw the brothers' attempt to clear through traffic as a sign of provocation and proceeded to attack them with knives and other sharp weapons.
Bonek leader Andi Peci, who was near the scene of the murders, firmly promised to help the police investigate the case. "It's beyond logic. I am very disappointed with the incident. Hopefully this event is the last," he said.
