VP Kalla Sets Three Success Parameters for 2018 Asian Games
Jakarta. The head of a steering committee for the 2018 Asian Games, Vice President Jusuf Kalla, has set three success parameters for Indonesia as the host nation. These parameters were set during a coordination meeting at the Indonesian Olympic Committee office in South Jakarta on Saturday (25/03).
The meeting was attended by Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi, Coordinating Human Development and Cultural Affairs Minister Puan Maharani, Communications and Informatics Minister Rudiantara, Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) Chairman Erick Thohir, South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin and National Sports Committee (KONI) Chairman Tono Suratman.
Kalla was quoted on the Sports Ministry's official website as saying that the three parameters are: "developing new or revamped sporting venues that can be re-used; perfect execution of the main events; and getting as many medals as possible."
A few weeks ago, Minister Puan had already set a target for Indonesia to be in the top ten countries in next year's Games.
Government to fork out more than Rp 30t
Kalla also revealed how much money the government will spend to prepare for the Games, most of it on building or renovating much-needed infrastructure.
"The government will spend Rp 7 trillion ($526 million) to build an athletes' village, Rp 3 trillion on sporting venues and Rp 17 trillion on long-term infrastructure in host cities Jakarta and Palembang," Kalla said.
"We have also given Rp 4.5 trillion to the Inasgoc [Indonesia Asian Games Organizing Committee] to run the event. So, in total, the government will spend more than Rp 30 trillion," he added.
Some private companies will also sponsor the Games, relieving some of the burden from the government.
"It's not possible to fund the Asian Games entirely using the state budget. We will invite private companies to sponsor the event," Minister Puan said.
