Wiranto and Gita the Only Candidates in PBSI Chairmanship Election
Jakarta. Only two candidates emerged to contest the chairmanship election of the Indonesian Badminton Federation, or PBSI, on Thursday (27/10). They are incumbent chairman Gita Wirjawan and Chief Security Minister Wiranto.
Wiranto, who claimed majority support of the PBSI provincial bodies ahead of the election, has gained one more pre-election vote from PBSI North Kalimantan, securing 19 ballots out of 34.
"The North Kalimantan representative came to us with an official letter of support for Wiranto and a letter confirming the withdrawal of support for Gita," Wiranto campaign team spokesman Fadli Aulia told Antara news agency. "We're confident he [Wiranto] can win the election by acclamation."
However, there appears to be inconsistencies in the provincial bodies' backing.
"Both candidates submitted forms in which they claimed to be supported by 18 provincial bodies. It implies that one of them must have issued a double nomination," said Fuad Basya of the PBSI electoral team.
"We'll verify the issue in a meeting on Sunday," he added.
The PBSI national meeting, which will be held to elect the new chairman, will take place in Surabaya, East Java, from Sunday to Tuesday.
