Indonesia will host the second general assembly of the Centrist Asia Pacific Democrats International, a nongovernmental organization that gathers democratic leaders, officials and academics from the Asia-Pacific region, in Makassar, South Sulawesi, next month.

Capdi chairman Jusuf Kalla, a former Indonesian vice president, on Thursday said that the general assembly, which will take place from May 20-21, will be themed “Mobilizing Governments, Political Parties and Civil Societies to Promote Peace and Reconciliation and to Fight Climate Change in Asia.”

“This Capdi conference is convened as a form of concerns of the leaders and former leaders of Asia-Pacific countries and the world, over the issue of world peace, poverty eradication and fighting the increasingly worrisome global climate change,” Kalla said in a statement issued by the organization.

Capdi membership includes both current and former leaders, public figures, executives, lawmakers and academics from 20 countries in the region.

Some prominent members are former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra, former Filipino House Speaker Jose de Venecia, Malaysian Prime Minister Muhammad Najib bin Tun Razak, Timor Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, former president of the Philippines Fidel Ramos and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Filipino Vice President Jejomar Binay, Nobel Prize laureate and Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi as well as former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari and EU President Jose Manuel Barroso also plan to attend the conference.

Kalla, who is serving as the Capdi chairman for a second term, said that he will chair the meeting this year.

Erwin Aksa, the chairman of the organizing committee, said that the conference will promote conflict resolution in the region and fight against global climate change.

“The Capdi conference carries a message, calling on all countries in the world to safeguard peace in the long, term, as well as security, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region,” Erwin said.
