Malaysia's TM ONE Launches Data Center in Johor, Looks for Potential Partnership With Indonesia
Kuala Lumpur. TM ONE, a business unit of state-controlled telecommunications company Telekom Malaysia, has invested up to 300 million ringgit ($70.94 million) for the development of a data center in Johor Bahru to cater to a growing demand from foreign entities.
Located at Nusajaya Technology Park, the tier-3 Iskandar Putri Johor core data center serves as a regional hub to provide services, including cloud systems, high-speed broadband connectivity and business process outsourcing.
"We want this data center to serve as a regional hub. We have good infrastructure for our neighboring countries, like to Singapore, while we also have a connectivity to Indonesia through Dumai, Riau and to Sabah, Sarawak, on Borneo Island," TM ONE executive vice president Azizi A. Hadi said on Tuesday (07/11).
Built on 30,000 square meters of land, the data center, which started operations last month, serves local companies and foreign corporations around Southeast Asia, in sectors ranging from banking and finance, telecommunications, tech and the startup industry.
The company has the option to develop and increase its total space to up to 90,000 square meters, depending on customer demand.
"At least 30,000 square meters area serves 1,000 racks of servers. With 90,000 square meters area, we will have a total of 3,000 server racks in the future," said TM ONE chief technology officer Nizam Arshad.
TM ONE is currently constructing a twin core data center in Cyberjaya, Kuala Lumpur. The construction of that center is at least 53 percent complete and is slated for completion by June next year.
As the data center is located to nearby Singapore, the company expects that it can be a strategic area, while also creating competitive business costs compared to other countries' data centers.
"At the moment we have potential customers from Singapore and global companies. We are also talking to some customers from Indonesia. We are trying to let them know what we are doing," said Arshad.
TM ONE is also looking for opportunities outside Malaysia and is currently in talks with clients from Indonesia for a potential partnership in the near future.
"In the meantime, if we have Indonesian clients, we can connect by high-speed line through IPDC and provide their services. So you don't have to be physically in Indonesia, but you can be here and connect with our services," Arshad said.
