Jakarta. Uber announced on Wednesday (13/04) that the company has launched UberMOTOR, an on-demand motorcycle ride service, in Jakarta.
"UberMOTOR gives more choice to riders, at a lower cost but with the same high quality Uber experience, and to motorcycle drivers, who can now access technology to hep them cover the cost of their trips by sharing the journey with another Jakartan," an Uber representative wrote on a blog post.
On Uber's mobile app, Jakarta-based users can now toggle to UberMOTOR and hail a motorbike ride.
Based on the Jakarta Globe's observation on Wednesday morning, however, no motors were available yet in the city's main business areas, such as Senayan, Sudirman, Gatot Subroto and Kuningan.
The San Francisco-based company has previously launched a similar service called UberMOTO in Bangkok as well as several cities in India, according to TechInAsia.
UberMOTOR's presence in Jakarta is set to compete with the widely popular motorcyle ride services already provided by Indonesia's Go-Jek and Malaysia's GrabBike — both of which have been actively growing their fleets of drivers recently.
Claiming UberMOTOR as "the most affordable ride in town," Uber has set the base fare for a motorcycle ride at Rp 1,000 with additional costs of Rp 1,000 per kilometer and Rp 100 per minute. Users can pay with cash or credit card.
Uber is currently giving away free rides to first-time users to celebrate the launch of UberMOTOR — users can key in the code "UberMOTORJKT" on the mobile app to get a free ride worth Rp 75,000.
The company also invite users to share their experience using UberMOTOR on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #MOTORPHOTO today.
