Jakarta. Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi warned about the increasing danger of terrorism during the closing ceremony of the 85th Interpol General Assembly in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Thursday (10/11).

"The danger is increasing; IS [the Islamic State militant group] has been using conventional and nonconventional threats. Terrorists have no religion. No countries can deal with this enemy on their own," Retno said.

According to the minister, the world is still far from being peaceful and unlikely to become stable in the near future, as there is no improvement in the global economy.

Interpol has a crucial role in dealing with transnational organized crime.

"Interpol strives to maintain international safety with its contribution to the architecture of global security. The police indeed play an essential role," she said.

Retno said the four-day meeting, which was attended by delegates from 167 countries, resulted in several legal partnerships and schemes to improve investigative techniques.

"Developments in information technology open new opportunities [to terrorists], and make cyber fraud and crime possible; extremist groups have also been using social media for recruitment and to disseminate their propaganda," Retno said.

Since the internet has become an effective platform for spreading information, Interpol should be able to facilitate tighter international cooperation between law enforcers.

The Jakarta Center for Law Enforcement Cooperation in Semarang, Central Java, operates as a regional resource and training center for Southeast Asia that focuses on counterterrorism. It has already trained more than 20,000 police officers from various countries.
