Bekraf to Produce Films Promoting Tourist Destinations in Indonesia
Jakarta. Indonesia's Creative Economy Agency, or Bekraf, plans to produce 10 films set in the country's priority tourist destinations as part of the Tourism Ministry's "Indonesia Incorporated" initiative, a statement released by the ministry said on Wednesday (20/09).
Abdur Rohim Boy Berawi, Bekraf's research, education and development deputy, said the agency has selected 10 directors to work on 10 fiction films. All the projects are still in their early stages, with the agency planning to meet potential investors in the film funding forum Akatara later this year.
"The Indonesian Film Council (BPI) and Bekraf kickstarted this film program last March," Abdur said on Tuesday.
The two agencies worked with the Indonesian Film Directors Club (IFDC) to select suitable directors for the project. They then sent the directors to the selected tourist destinations to do research and write a story.
"The directors will take their inspiration from local culture. They will pitch their projects at Akatara," Abdur said.
Akatara is a new program from Bekraf's Film, Animation and Video division. The two-day funding forum will run from Nov. 15 to Nov. 16 in Jakarta.
The locations for the films are set to be Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Tanjung Kelayang in Bangka Belitung, Tanjung Lesung in Banten, the Thousand Islands in Jakarta, Borobudur Temple in Central Java, Mount Bromo in East Java, Mandallika in West Nusa Tenggara, Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara, Wakatobi in Southeast Sulawesi and Morotai in North Maluku.
The Tourism Ministry has already produced a film, "Trinity: the Nekad Traveler" (Trinity: The Reckless Traveler), released earlier this year, to promote tourist destinations in Lampung.
Esthy Reko Astuti, the ministry's tourism development deputy, said the new films should attract more tourists to the country's priority tourist destinations.
"We've got Bekraf and the directors to thank. Film is exactly the right media to promote these destinations," she said.
