Borobudur to Be Developed Into Leading Tourist Destination: Tourism Ministry
Jakarta. The Tourism Ministry said on Monday (22/08) that a complex will be developed in Borobudur — one of the ministry's top 10 prioritized tourism destinations — to boost tourism numbers to the region.
In furtherance of this goal, the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of National Development Planning, Ministry of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucracy Reforms and the newly-established Borobudur Tourism Authority Board came together on Monday (22/08) and agreed to develop Borobudur.
Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan led the meeting, joined by several other ministers, including the Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya, Minister of National Development Planning Bambang Brodjonegoro and the Minister of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucracy Reforms Asman Abnur.
At the meeting, Arief presented a plan to develop a Borobudur complex.
"Bappenas [National Development Planning Board] is fully supporting the plan and we have specially mapped Borobudur, [Lake] Toba and Mandalika to be developed in 2018," Bambang said.
Arief said the establishment of the Borobudur Tourism Authority Board will turn Borobudur into one of the leading international destinations with a potential of attracting 2 million foreign tourists in 2019.
"Borobudur [...] is an attraction based on the fact that it is a Unesco World Heritage site. The development will be focused on developing the site into an attraction with more accessibility and amenities," Arief said.
"To be a successful attraction, it needs to be accessible. To make that happen, Yogyakarta's new international airport in Kulonprogo will provide transportation [for tourists] to the region," Arief added.
