Fire Devastates Parts of Jakarta's Heritage Maritime Museum
Jakarta. Jakarta's Maritime Museum in North Jakarta, housed in a former Dutch colonial-era warehouse, caught fire on Tuesday morning (16/01) and firefighters are now still there trying to extinguish it.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. At least 16 fire engines were seen coming in and out of the museum complex.
Jakarta Police spokesman Chief Comr. Argo Yuwono told the Jakarta Globe no one was killed or injured by the fire.
The Maritime Museum, or Museum Bahari, is located in the northern part of the capital, in an old compound containing four Dutch store houses. Three of them have been converted into museum buildings.
The storehouses were built between 1652 and 1771.
The museum is now also part of Jakarta's extended Old Town complex, which houses many dilapidated heritage buildings from the Dutch colonial era.
