Going Digital the Fastest Way to Improve Airport Services: Tourism Minister
Jakarta. The Ministry of Tourism has expressed appreciation of the cooperation between the Ministry of Transportation and state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II on the development of digital technology to improve passenger services.
AP II is developing the Indonesia Airports smartphone application with assistance from the Transportation Ministry to improve customer experience and push for greater operational efficiency.
Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said in a statement issued by his ministry on Sunday (21/05) that among all modes of transportation, air transportation saw the highest growth in passenger numbers.
"To grow faster, there is no other way, but to go digital," Arief, the former chief executive of state-controlled telecommunication company Telkom Indonesia, said in the statement.
He was speaking during a seminar titled "The Rise of Digital Airports in Indonesia," at AP II's headquarters at Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, on Saturday.
"I appreciate what AP II and other stakeholders have done. I am sure we can do better by going digital," Arif said.
AP II, which operates dozens of airports in the western part of Indonesia, including Soekarno-Hatta airport and Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport in East Jakarta, is pushing for a better customer experience and business model, while also improving operational efficiency in its "Going Digital" campaign.
Newly appointed AP II president director Muhamad Awaludin said the company plans to become the best-connected airport operator in the region.
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said that if Indonesia follows in the footsteps of the United States, Japan and China, its busiest airport, Soekarno Hatta, it will increase its global ranking to 30th place by 2018 and 15th the year after.
The airport is currently ranked 44th on the list of the worlds' 100 top airports.
