Gov't Will Refurbish Homestays to Boost Tourism
Jakarta. The Ministry of Tourism is going to renovate homestays in villages adjacent to North Sumatra's Lake Toba, Banten's Tanjung Lesung and East Java's Bromo-Semeru-Tengger to attract more tourists to the scenic sites.
"With improved condition of homestays, local residents will gain better profit and attract more tourists to these destinations," Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said in a statement on Thursday (27/04).
The goal is also supported by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises and Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN), which is the Indonesia's largest mortgage leader.
In each place, 100 homes with biggest damages will be chosen for renovation. The households will receive up to Rp 15 million ($1,125) through a funding program by BTN.
"BTN will provide Rp 15 million to the houses in the worst condition. Our goal is to revamp the homestays in these three destinations," the Public Works Ministry's director for urban planning Dedy Permadi said in the same statement.
Owners of the households that can receive the assistance must be able to prove their ownership.
The ministry's secretary general, Taufik Widjoyono, added that it is crucial to improve especially the standard of sanitation.
"Facilities with good sanitation will attract more tourists," he said.
