Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has urged Indonesian royals and palace authorities to develop history-based tourism.
"Many countries are developing tourism by promoting their heritage. The important thing is to compliment it with an interesting background so tourists can enjoy not only the buildings but also the stories of the past," the president said during the opening ceremony of the 11th National Palace Festival at Maimun Palace in Medan, North Sumatra, on Sunday (26/11).
Jokowi said he has invited some kings and sultans to meet at the State Palace in Central Jakarta in December to discuss the development of the palace tourism plan. Around 20-30 people are expected to attend the meeting.
The development of heritage tourism will be beneficial to the welfare of the people living in the areas around the palaces, Jokowi said.
"I also asked for the establishment of a national palace festival as a means to improve regional economies," he added.
The president advised palace authorities to maintain togetherness and maintain the spirit of unity as their predecessors must also have demanded.
