Jakarta. Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore will join Indonesia in the Kenduri Seni Melayu festival at Lapangan Engku Putri in Batam, Riau Islands, on Nov. 17-19.
The event will feature performances representing the cultures of the participating countries.
"We share cultural traits, so this event will fit each of the participants," deputy for tourism development at the Ministry of Tourism, Esthy Reko Astuti, said on Monday (13/11).
Hundreds of banners and billboards advertising the event are visible on the streets of Batam, which borders with Singapore and Malaysia.
Pebrialin from the Batam Tourism Office said that Kenduri Seni Melayu is expected not only to preserve local cultures, but also to increase the number of foreign arrivals in Batam.
Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said the event is like a magnet for attracting foreign tourists.
"Batam is strategically located, bordering with Malaysia, Singapore and southern Thailand, and is culturally akin to them," said Arief.
