Mascot Launched for Ya'ahowu Carnival in Nias, North Sumatra
Jakarta. North Sumatra has introduced a mascot for the annual Ya'ahowu Carnival, which will be held in Gunungsitoli, Nias, on Nov. 23-26.
"The mascot aims to promote the event and encourage tourism stakeholders in the region to create economic value out of it," Gunungsitoli Mayor Lakhomizaro Zebua said in a statement.
The mascot, named "Magiao" (a parrot species that lives in Nias), carries the official tagline of "Dream Island of Nias." It will represent the carnival for the next five years.
According to Lakhomizaro, the bird is smarter and bigger than other parrot species.
The mascot is yellow in the neck area to symbolize the necklaces worn by the island's kings. Its red and black body symbolizes bravery and prosperity.
Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said the mascot will create a potential for the local handicraft sector.
