Minister Urges Indonesia to Learn From Thailand's Tourism Industry
Jakarta. Tourism Minister Arief Yahya praised Thailand’s excellent management of its tourism industry during a visit to Bangkok on Sept. 28.
"[We've got to] learn from Thailand success in handling security for visitors, in promoting its local cuisine, including street foods, and how they manage tourist accommodation all over the country," Arief said in a statement.
"There's always a Thai restaurant everywhere we go in the world," the minister said, suggesting that clever promotion has done wonders to familiarize Thai food to European, Australian and American tastebuds.
Security in Thailand also consistently received positive feedback from tourists, as well as its services.
The minister wanted to create a special team to study good practices in Thailand's tourism industry.
Thailand pulled in 32 million international visitors last year, way ahead of the less than 20 million that Indonesia attracted.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has declared since the beginning of his administration that tourism has to be one of the pillars of the national economy. In 2018, tourism will be one of three prioritized industries with agriculture and fishery.
