Jakarta. Tanjung Lesung near Anyer in Banten — one of the Indonesian government's "10 New Balis" priority tourist destinations — will hold the Rhino Cross Triathlon on Sept. 24.
"There will be swimming, biking and running on tracks that will highlight the natural beauty of Tanjung Lesung," local tourism head Poernomo Siswoprasetijo said on Sunday (18/06).
Some of the natural attractions of Tanjung Lesung include a mangrove forest, pristine beaches and rice fields. The triathlon will go through all three.
It will form a part of the Tanjung Lesung Festival, which will also feature a cultural exhibition and a food festival.
Organizers of the festival also plan a record-breaking feat for the youngest diver to hoist the Indonesian flag in the waters of the Sunda Strait.
During the festival, two other sporting events will also take place, the Mountain Bike Cross Country Marathon and Sunset Trail Run.
Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said the triathlon "will have a direct impact on the local economy" and suggested that more sports and tourism events should be combined in one package.
"When sports meets tourism... [it] has great media value," Arief added.
