Pesona Mandeh Festival to Boost Tourism, Investment in West Sumatra
Jakarta. The Ministry of Tourism has held a culture festival to promote Mandeh, one of the most scenic destinations on the southern coast of West Sumatera.
The "Pesona Mandeh," or "Enchanting Mandeh," festival aimed to introduce the location to the wider public.
Mandeh is often called Sumatra's own Raja Ampat – a region in West Papua famous for its white sandy beaches and colorful coral reefs.
South Pesisir district head Hendrajoni said the local administration welcomes investors to develop Mandeh into a tourist spot.
"No matter how beautiful a tourist destination is, it will be impossible to attract visitors without promotional efforts. We are grateful for the central government's encouragement to organize the Pesona Mandeh festival," Hendrajoni said.
The festival was held from May 4 to Sunday (07/05) and featured a culinary exhibition, an underwater photography competition and performing arts.
The festival also saw a rubab performance on Saturday, breaking the record of the Museum of Records (MURI) for involving the biggest number of musicians playing the traditional string instrument.
It also showcased a boat race and deep sea diving.
"Mandeh can easily attract tourists, because it is already a beautiful place with many culinary delights," Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said.
