Security Beefed Up in Bali as Obama and Family Arrive for Holiday
Denpasar, Bali. Former President of the United States Barack Obama will arrive in Bali on Friday afternoon (23/06) for a holiday with his family, local officials said.
Local police have beefed up security for Obama but will not block public access to tourist destinations that the former president might visit.
Obama, who spent his early childhood years in Indonesia, only requested that his trip this time would not be covered by the media, I Dewa Eka Wardana, an assistant from Bali's Secretariat Office, said.
"He will arrive in Bali at 5.55 p.m. local time on Friday," Dewa said.
Ngurah Rai International Airport officials warned delays are to be expected at the airport on Friday as security procedures require half the airport to be closed for other flights half and hour before the plane that carries Obama arrives.
"We expect a delay of around 45 minutes," Yuloi Sudoso, an administrator at Ngurah Rai, said.
Lieutenant Colonel Jumarto, the Air Force Commander at Ngurah Rai air base, said the United States Secret Service (USSS) has arrived there to make security preparations for the former president's arrival.
Obama will come to Indonesia with 13 members of his family, including his wife Michelle and his two daughters.
While in Bali, Obama will stay at the Four Seasons hotel in Ubud, Dewa said.
