Jakarta. Yogyakarta's Gunungkidul Tourism Community Alert has made some inroads into reducing poverty in Yogyakarta with its efforts to improve tourism in the area.
According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), poverty rate in Gunungkidul has declined to 19,34 percent in 2016 from 21,73 percent in 2015.
Sumarwiyanto, the head of BPS Gunungkidul, said the declining poverty rate in the district has been the result of a more lively tourism industry in the past few years.
"More tourist attractions mean more money for the local economy. A lot of people here earn their money from tourism," Sumarwiyanto said in a statement on Sunday (03/12).
Gunungkidul has many publicly managed tourist attractions, including a geopark where Pindul Cave, Kalisuci Cave and Jomblang Cave are located. Other popular attractions in the area are Drini Beach and Pok Tunggal Beach.
