Jakarta. Tourism Minister Arief Yahya has issued a requirement for officials in his ministry to wear traditional attire during the national tourism coordination meeting in Jakarta on Sept. 26-27.
"It aims to show a diverse Indonesia; the country's diversity is a major force in tourism," Arief said.
He added that it is preferred to call the traditional attire "Nusantara costume" rather than "national costume," because the word "national" means uniformity, while Indonesia is very diverse. Nusantara is a contemporary term, derived from Javanese, for the Indonesian archipelago.
Arief issued a similar instruction during Indonesia's Independence Day celebrations this year.
The 2018 events calendar will be discussed during the coordination meeting aimed at achieving next year's target of attracting 17 million foreign tourists and 270 million domestic tourists.
Several government agencies, regional administrations, academics, businesspeople and local community and media representatives are expected to attend the meeting.
