Tourism Ministry to Improve Crisis Centers Across Archipelago
Jakarta. The Tourism Ministry will begin upgrading and constructing comprehensive crisis centers to more quickly respond to emergency situations arising in popular tourism destinations across the archipelago.
"Tourism requires stability, security and safety [...] We must anticipate anything that may impact our tourism industry," Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said in a statement received by the Jakarta Globe.
To improve the country’s capacity in responding to emergencies in popular tourist spots, the ministry and the Law and Public Communications Bureau will meet on Wednesday (17/05) to discuss arranging new guidelines to better manage crisis situations.
Tourism Ministry secretary general Ukus Kuswara noted that many popular tourist destinations across the archipelago are susceptible to wide-ranging crises, including natural disasters, epidemics and terror attacks.
Ukus said that being able to effectively manage arising crises is essential in ensuring the safety of foreign tourists, who might otherwise think twice about visiting the archipelago.
"Like [Arief] said, tourism is an easy, inexpensive and fast way to increase foreign exchange reserves and GDP and can help create local jobs. It’s important that we keep it conducive," Ukus said.
