Airport Worker Wounded in Accidental Shooting at Soekarno-Hatta
Jakarta. A worker was lightly wounded when a policeman accidentally discharged a firearm at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, on Sunday morning (22/07).
The incident reportedly occurred at 05.55 at the check-in counter of national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia in Terminal 3, when Brig. Galuh Apriyana assisted a colleague to unload his firearm before departing on a flight to Banda Aceh.
"The firearm was pointed at the floor when the shot accidentally went off. The bullet ricocheted off the floor and grazed the leg of a member of the ground-handling staff who was on duty at the time," Febri Toga Simatupang, senior services and facilities manager at Terminal 3, told the Jakarta Globe.
The staff member received medical assistance immediately and he is out of danger, Febri said.
He said this is the first incident of its kind to occur at the airport. Terminal 3 is the newest addition to Indonesia's busiest airport.
"We actually provide a special room where passengers can unload their firearms, so this incident is unfortunate. We have asked all airline staff to ensure that such procedures are only carried out in the designated areas," Febri said.
Airport operations were not affected by the incident, which has been resolved in an amicably manner after police officers met with the management of state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II and representatives of ground-handling company Gapura Angkasa.
