Faulty Buses to Be Prohibited From Entering Bogor's Hilly Puncak Area Following Fatal Accidents
Jakarta. Cianjur Transportation Agency in West Java will prohibit buses that do not meet current safety standards from traveling on the road connecting Bogor with Cianjur, West Java, following two deadly accidents in the area in recent weeks.
The restriction was implemented based on a joint agreement signed by the Transportation Ministry, West Java Transportation Agency and regional police.
"We have taken this step to [prevent] another accident caused by buses that do not meet safety standards, which are typically not even from Cianjur or Bogor," Cianjur Transportation Agency head Djoni Rojali said on Wednesday (03/05).
"Bus [operators] have made it difficult for us to take actions, including to conduct inspections."
Djoni explained that after several coordination meetings with various parties, the agency ultimately decided to ban faulty buses from using Jalan Raya Puncak connecting Bogor with Cianjur to prevent further fatalities.
Transportation authorities said the previous accidents in the area were not due to poor road conditions or a lack of street signs or adequate lighting, but were instead caused by human error and faulty vehicles.
On Sunday, at least 13 people were killed in a deadly road accident involving a tour bus and several cars and motorcycles.
"Those accidents were due to faulty buses, whether they have met safety standards or not, and human error," Djoni said.
"We will coordinate with the Bogor administration and local police to conduct raids and inspections on every bus that passes through the area, including other heavy-load vehicles, such as trucks."
Djoni has instructed agency officials to inspect all public and tourist bus armadas passing through Cianjur.
"We will check all relevant paperwork and roadworthiness certificates to avoid any forgeries," Djoni added.
