Jakarta. Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has expressed his concerns over the safety of commuters traveling to their hometowns for the upcoming Idul Fitri holidays, especially if they choose to travel by motorcycles.

"Motorcycles are dangerous for long-distance travel. We call on the citizens to not use them for that [purpose] or to reduce the use," Budi said in Jakarta on Thursday (08/06).

Last year's exodus saw a high number of traffic accidents involving motorcycles. This year, the ministry provides 250,000 free rides on public buses, trains and even ships to allow Indonesia's growing urban population to return to the countryside.

The minister also advised members of the public to depart to their hometowns before the peak of the homecoming season, which is expected to start on June 23.

"It will reduce the traffic. People will have more comfort instead of having to endure long jams," he said.

According to Transportation Ministry data, 18 million people used public transportation during last year's Idul Fitri exodus.
